The Finished Project
Improving Bedside Manner
The Design Process
The Problem
The staffing committee at Harborview Hospital has concerns about the way the nursing staff is interacting with the patients. Patient surveys, given after in-patient hospital stays, indicate that patients feel that nurses do not demonstrate a positive bedside manner. The healthcare industry is moving toward patient-centered care, so good satisfaction ratings are important. As consumers, patients can boost or damage the reputation of a facility with their opinions. Satisfied patients could become loyal patrons, contributing to the financial stability of a healthcare organization.

Action Mapping
For this project, I consulted with a nurse who has experience caring for patients in hospitals as my SME.(Subject Matter Expert) Together we created an action map using Miro, which outlined the main goal of the project and the actions, sub-actions and practice activities that would contribute to achieving that goal. Several of the sub-actions could be reinforced by creating job aids, infographics or simple checklists. However, we identified three high-priority actions that would serve as a foundation for an eLearning course; using appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication, actively listening to patients, and paying attention to the patient environment.
Design Document
After completing the Action Mapping process, I proceeded to the creation of the Design Document. The learning objectives that I designed, were based on the actions and sub-actions from the Action Map. Additionally, they are closely interconnected with Bloom's Taxonomy and aim to enhance the effectiveness of this course by defining clear goals and aligning instructional strategies accordingly.
Course Outline
After creating the Design Document and consulting with the SME, I suggested a change in the order of the course topics. A change in the sequence imitates, more realistically, how a nurse would be interacting with her/his patients in the real-world, therefore, improving retention of the learning content.
